Finasteride is a synthetic derivative of the drug 5-aza-2-aza-1,3a,3a-tetrahydro-5-methyl-2-oxo-1,3-dihydro-5-methyl-pyrazino-1,3-deillusi-4-benzamine. A new study shows that the new drug, which is a testosterone blocker, may have a potentially life saving effect on prostate cancer patients. This is the latest in a series of studies by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which are the subject of an advisory to the FDA.

The study was conducted by the Cancer Prevention Trialists Trial (PCTR) of more than 10,000 men with prostate cancer who received one of the drugs finasteride and dutasteride and received either a placebo or an equal amount of each drug. The results of the trial showed that the drug was well tolerated, with no major adverse effects.
The PCTR is a multidimensional, multistep trial of more than 500,000 patients over eight years in which participants were randomly assigned to either the placebo or the drugs finasteride and dutasteride. The study found that the dutasteride drug significantly reduced the risk of death in men with prostate cancer, compared to the placebo group. In addition, the drug improved the overall survival in men with prostate cancer. The results were presented to the FDA advisory committee for approval at the American Society for Clinical Oncology’s annual meeting in September.
As part of this advisory, Dr. Robert M. Eberhard, M. D., director of the department of urology at the University of California San Francisco, said: “The results of this PCTR are exciting because they show that dutasteride is safe and well tolerated, and the results of this study show that the drug has a life saving effect on prostate cancer patients.”
